Après un accueil enthousiaste du public montréalais en 2025, elle revient porter cette œuvre qu’elle ne considère pas comme un exercice de virtuosité, mais comme une conversation intime, entamée bien avant ses débuts sur scène et jamais interrompue depuis. Son mentor, Sir András Schiff, salue chez elle « l’étonnante clarté, la pureté et la maturité » de son jeu. Cette soirée marque vingt ans de musique partagée : un verre de l’amitié sera offert avec l’achat de votre billet, et le tarif a été pensé pour laisser à chacun la liberté de contribuer davantage, si le cœur vous en dit. Les Variations Goldberg, c’est trente variations d’une architecture vertigineuse… et un éclat de rire à la fin. Là où l’on attendait le canon le plus savant de tous, Bach écrit un quodlibet « ce qui vous plaît » : le jeu que sa famille pratiquait lors des retrouvailles, où l’on empile des chansons populaires jusqu’à ce que tout le monde s’esclaffe. On y reconnaît « les choux et les navets m’ont chassé » et « il y a si longtemps que je n’ai pas été auprès de toi ». Le sommet du répertoire pour clavier se referme donc sur une chanson de retrouvailles, avant que l’Aria du début ne revienne, intacte. Pour une soirée d’anniversaire, verre en main, on n’aurait pas osé inventer meilleur programme. After receiving an enthusiastic reception from Montreal audiences in 2025, she returns to perform this work, which she views not as an exercise in virtuosity, but as an intimate conversation—one that began long before her stage debut and has never been interrupted since. Her mentor, Sir András Schiff, praises the “astonishing clarity, purity, and maturity” of her playing. This evening marks twenty years of shared music: a complimentary drink will be offered with the purchase of your ticket, and the ticket price has been set to give everyone the freedom to contribute more, if you so desire. The Goldberg Variations consist of 30 variations with a dizzying structure… and a burst of laughter at the end. Just when we expected the most sophisticated canon of all, Bach writes a quodlibet “whatever you like”: the game his family played during family reunions, where they’d string together folk songs until everyone burst out laughing. We recognize “The Cabbages and Turnips Chased Me Away” and “It’s Been So Long Since I’ve Been With You.” The pinnacle of the keyboard repertoire thus concludes with a reunion song, before the opening Aria returns, unchanged. For a birthday celebration, glass in hand, one could not have dreamed up a better program.
