The accordion, with its ability to sustain polyphonic lines, to shape the breath like a portable organ, becomes an ideal partner for giving new life to the classical repertoire in general and to the baroque repertoire in particular. This approach finds a natural extension in the exploration of other musical universes. The works of Astor Piazzolla blend the heritage of tango with classical demands. Villa-Lobos, with his Bachianas Brasileiras No. 4, pays homage to Bach by making him dialogue with the colors of Brazil, while Guastavino, in his Cantos Populares, draws on Argentine popular traditions to reveal their poetry. ThĂ©o Ould thus highlights the continuity of the same gesture: uniting the rigor of classical language and the vitality of popular music in the living spirit of transcription. BUY YOUR TICKETS Anecdote: When Piazzolla had to fight to be taken seriously Astor Piazzolla, trained in classical music with Nadia Boulanger in Paris, dreamed of writing « serious » works. But when he presented his neoclassical compositions to his teacher, Boulanger found them correct but bland. On the other hand, when he dared to play one of his tangos on the bandoneon (a cousin of the accordion), she exclaimed: « That’s your true face! Never abandon it. » Fun fact: The first accordion with 5 keys. It was in 1829 that the term « accordion » was first found. The invention is attributed to Cyrill Demian, a piano and organ maker in Vienna, Austria. At the time, the very first accordion had only 5 keys, which produced different sounds depending on whether you pulled or pushed. The left hand did not play, but was simply dedicated to managing the bellows. Our musical selection for ThĂ©o Ould. Discover our Artistic Director’s playlist on Qobuz.
