Au Canada, il nâexiste que quelques ateliers de facteurs de clavecins (moins de cinq). MontrĂ©al a la chance dâaccueillir lâatelier BeauprĂ© (pĂšre et Fils) qui fabrique des clavecins depuis plus de 30 ans! Ne demandez pas Ă un facteur de clavecin le temps que prendra la facture de son prochain instrument. Il ne le sait pas: un artisan dâart ne compte pas son temps! In LĂŒneburg, he met Georg Böhm, master of the chorale variation and the ornamented prelude, whose influence left a deep imprint on his organ writing. Johann Caspar Ferdinand Fischer, through his Ariadne musica, already foreshadowed The Well-Tempered Clavier: the idea of exploring all tonalities through preludes and fugues. Bach also inherited from Johann Jakob Froberger a cosmopolitan vision of the dance suiteâcombining German rigor, Italian suppleness, and French elegance. As for the Venetian Benedetto Marcello, his fusion of musical rhetoric and sacred textâparticularly in his psalmsâresonated with Bachâs own spiritual vocation. Though never their direct pupil, Bach transformed these legacies into a unique language where Lutheran depth, contrapuntal mastery, and European openness converge. By selecting five harpsichords to highlight these masters of the Baroque keyboard, Luc BeausĂ©jour offers a total aesthetic experience that links each instrument and composer with the refinement and authenticity of the performerâs own artistic journey. Thatâs roughly the same distance (over 400 kilometers) that Johann Sebastian Bach walked from Arnstadt to LĂŒbeck in 1705 to hear and study with Dieterich Buxtehude. History and Instruments A centuries-old craft: the harpsichord maker. The French term facteur de clavecinâliterally âharpsichord makerââis used instead of âmanufacturerâ because itâs the historical word for the highly skilled artisans who make these instruments. It comes from medieval French, the same root used for facteur dâorgues (organ builder) and facteur de pianos (piano maker).In Canada, there are fewer than five active harpsichord workshops. Montreal is fortunate to host the BeauprĂ© workshop (father and son), crafting harpsichords for over 30 years. And a word to the wise: never ask a facteur de clavecin how long it will take to finish their next instrumentâthey truly donât know. A master craftsman doesnât count the hours!
